Time in Art di Emilia Ferri

The ages of human life

One of the ways to consider time is obviously linked to the reflection about human life and its different stages. This reflection is frequently present also in art, in particular in painting. The figure of woman is the favourite, and "The Three ages of women" is a subject choosen by several artists in different periods. It usually represents a baby-child, a young and an old woman all together, as a symbol of the street everyone has to follow in the life.

One of the most famous and most poetic version of "The three ages of women" is the one painted by the very important Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, in the style usually called "Art Nouveau" [F] [E] [ES] (or "Jugendstil", or "Liberty" [I] ), full of elegance and made more precious thanks to the use of gold and floreal decorations [E] [I] [F] [ES] .
