L'esclavage a été pratiqué dans toutes les sociétés sédentaires. Dans l'Antiquité, c'était le sort qui attendait ordinairement les prisonniers de guerre.

Le 4 février 1794, pour la première fois dans l’histoire, fut proclamée par la Convention nationale, l’abolition de la traite et de l’esclavage, près de 4 ans après l’adoption par l’Assemblée de la Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen. Mais l’abolition, appliquée dans toutes les colonies françaises, sauf à l’île Bourbon et aux Mascareignes, fut révoquée en 1802. Il fallut attendre le 27 avril 1848 pour que le gouvernement provisoire de la République abolît par décret l’esclavage. Désormais, selon l’article 7 du décret d'abolition immédiate de l’esclavage : « Le sol de France affranchit l’esclave qui le touche ».

Slaves were transported to America from the West coast of Africa after being captured and sold to slavers, or men in the business of buying and selling slaves. The slaves were transported to American by the "middle passage." The middle passage was an especially cruel trip during which the slaves were crowded into ships and chained to the hold of the ship for months at a time. Many slaves died during the journey due to the unsanitary conditions aboard the ship, diseases such as scurvy, dysentary, starvation or malnutrition, suffocation, and general homesickness. Captains were afraid that slaves would uprise against the crew, so they often separated slaves from the same tribes and punished them for talking or singing on the ship.

Historical context of the SI
The origins of the meter go back to at least the 18th century. At that time, there were two competing approaches to the definition of a standard unit of length. Some suggested defining the meter as the length of a pendulum having a half-period of one second; others suggested defining the meter as one ten-millionth of the length of the earth's meridian along a quadrant (one fourth the circumference of the earth). In 1791, soon after the French Revolution, the French Academy of Sciences chose the meridian definition over the pendulum definition because the force of gravity varies slightly over the surface of the earth, affecting the period of the pendulum.
