The Americans don’t have a typical “American” cuisine [E1] [ES1] [F1]. Furthermore they do not  boast a well balanced diet: many American people are used to eat pre-packed meals or food and snacks from fast-foods [E1] [ES1] [F1] [I1].

What is more representative of the food in America is probably the fast-food “diet”: hamburgers, chips and soft drinks. Among the soft drinks, Coca-Cola [E1] [ES1] [F1] [I1]  is the most popular drink worldwide.

American dishes

Beside hamburgers and French fries, some other typical American dishes are pancakes with maple syrup (of Canadian origin); as corn  is one of the main crop produced in many American states a typical American recipe is corn-on-the-cob [E1] [I1] served hot with butter.

The apple pie is quite popular in the U.S., even if it is distinctively of British origin.

Finally, there is bourbon whisky, made from corn.

Ethnic Cuisine in the States

America must hold the world record for the number of different types of food on offer: each immigrant group has brought its own way of cooking and many have opened restaurants and snack bars.

In many big cities you will easily find various ethnic cuisines, such as Vietnamese, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Jewish,… The list is endless and by now some of them are almost as typically “American” as hamburgers.

On the west coast, Mexican specialities are very popular among American people: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, also because of the high number of Mexican immigrants in the area.
