ANGLO-SAXON LITERATURE by Santina Santoro

- Unit description

The aim of this unit is first of all giving the English teachers some materials in order to have a general view of Old English Literature. The teachers should simplify these materials as they like to introduce their students to the topic.

Secondly we'll give some information about Beowulf, one of the most famous anglo-saxon literary works, and an example of how the teacher can build a lesson plan using a passage from this poem.

It doesn't mean the teachers have to follow the lesson plan step by step; this represents only a suggestion and the teachers can adapt the plan to their students as they prefer.

- Unit objectives

By the end of the lesson students should be able to:

- be introduced to Old English, the language of Beowulf

- learn about literature devices very common to Old English literature and how they are used in Beowulf

- read an extract from Beowulf and analyse it

- discover the relationship between Beowulf and the cinema
